Are you tired of your sore back? Do you hate sitting at your desk because you know it causes back pain?
Throw away your old traditional office chair like I did and join the ball chair movement with Gaiam’s balance ball chair. This ball chair review holds a special significance because this balance ball chair saved my life!
Here’s what I’ll cover:
- My Experience
- Pros
- Cons

My Experience
During my years at Cal State University, Fullerton as a Master’s student in music composition, I was spending hours upon hours at my desk writing music and improving my craft. I would spend literally 5 to 8 hours a day at my desk without taking so much as a bathroom break.
My traditional leather chair KILLED my back and after a few months of this routine, I was on the floor at least a few times a day stretching out my back because of the pain. Unfortunately, back pain runs in my family and I learned the hard way that I am more prone to back pain than I thought.
Luckily, my mom had come across this balance ball chair a few years back. She swore up and down that it saved her desk life and literally almost cured all her back pain.
I was out of options. I was forced to sit at my desk, but couldn’t because of intense back pain. So I called my mom to ask her about this new “balance” chair (which I didn’t believe in at first). After our conversation, I quickly ordered my own.
The first few hours using the Gaiam chair wasn’t life-changing, but after I spent a day sitting at my desk, I noticed my back pain was far less than usual. The next day, I noticed that sitting at the desk wasn’t tiring – because before it was like a timer was over my shoulder for my back pain.
Before the Gaiam chair, I always felt it was only a matter of time before the back pain would eventually distract me from my work. I even worked faster because of this “ticking time bomb” of back pain.
Soon enough, this balance ball chair began to save my work ethic and allowed me to sit at my desk for hours on end without any back pain. It was a miracle!
I had no idea I could live a life without back pain again!
Whenever I hear someone complain about back pain at their desk, I stop them and immediately suggest this balance chair.
Funny enough, I noticed the manager of a music store I work at in Mission Viejo also had the exact same chair – so I asked him about it.
Apparently, he used to lose feeling in his arms due to the pinched nerves from traditional office chairs and once he started using the Gaiam chair, it all went away. I’m so glad I found out about this chair early in life before I started to cause serious back issues from my old office chair.
Everyone I talk to about this chair always seems doubtful of its benefits (which I can understand because I was in the same boat a few years back), but I always keep trying to persuade them that it’s simple to save their back from pain.

Believe me. I am a true example of this.
- Removable 20” exercise ball
- Air pump
- Adjustable metal support bar
- 4 easy-glide caster (or wheels, which 2 of them lock in the back!)
- Exercise guide to be used with your new chair
Pros
The Gaiam balance ball chair has some obvious pros which I’ll list first but read on to read my cons of this chair (very few).
Benefits of the Gaiam balance ball chair:
- Relieve back pain
- Dr. Randy Weinzoff, a chiropractic consultant, developed this chair to alleviate aching arms, back, and legs that result from sitting at a desk for hours on end.
- Improve overall well-being
- With the reduction and sometimes full relief of aches and pains, your daily life will no longer revolve around back pain.
- Strengthen core and improve alignment
- Based on the actual exercise tool, the balance ball helps activate your core muscles and the balancing tendons around your back. Sit in a relaxed, but engaged position and feel assured your body has proper posture.
- Build a healthier back
- With proper posture on a daily basis, your back will shift to a healthy medium and will no longer be forced into painful and stagnant positions (caused by traditional office chairs).
- Activate your sit
Even though it is an exercise ball, the back support does provide a chance to sit back and relax slightly.
Cons
Deflation is the main reoccurring issue with these chairs, so you do have to take out the air-pump occasionally and inflate the exercise ball again. I usually do this only every few months though.
Sometimes you don’t notice the deflation. Because it gradually deflates, you may not even notice that you’ve sunk down into your chair a bit. I still only notice this when my back pain comes back – and then I remember, “oh yeah, I have to inflate the ball.”
The default look of the chair alone is kind of bland. But fortunately, there are extra accessories to help customize the look.
Accessories
These chairs are so popular that Gaiam has created a line of accessories to improve your chair’s look, use, and improve the overall user experience.
If you’re taller than the recommended height of 5’11’’, do not worry for there are “Gaiam Leg Extenders” that can add 2 inches to your chair.
If you’re not intrigued by the look of the chairs, there are some silky smooth covers to choose from available in many colors.
Conclusion
There is a large percentage of the population that sit at desks for work or for pleasure. I can’t imagine how many people must suffer from back pain from sitting at desks – and the sad part is they may never know there are solutions out there!
Before the Gaiam balance chair, I was laying on the floor daily after sitting at the desk because I couldn’t handle the back pain.
I’m so lucky I had a family member tell me of this chair after using it on their own. Without this chair, I probably wouldn’t be able to write this article even without taking multiple breaks throughout the day!
- If you are in need of a change in your life because of back pain, please take action and look into the Gaiam Balance Ball Chair.
I truly hope being introduced to this new lifestyle at the desk saves you a lot of pain. I’m very curious of your own opinion or your own experience! Please feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Hi Chase,
What a great review of the Gaiam chair. I wish I’d known about it years ago. A lot of my chronic back pain is due to sitting at a desk. Fortunately, I found that acupuncture works and this has been my go-to whenever the pain becomes severe.
However, I’ll probably buy the chair, it costs less than a couple of acupuncture treatments and will avoid me needing any.
Thanks,
Ed

Hi Ed. I’ve actually used acupuncture for my TMJ issues and experienced an amazing improvement! I would use the Gaiam chair as a replacement, but it would definitely help the need for as many treatments I’d say! Worth a shot. Take care – and best of luck with everything! I hope this back healthy chair ends up really helping you!

Hello Chase!
I FINALLY made a decision on which chair to buy after many weeks of research! Luckily I don’t have sore back problems yet, but I’m spending almost 10 hours a day siting on my computer and working from there and I’m sure if I continue using my static chair at some point I will face health issues. I’m pretty sure that this Gaiam balance chair is exactly what I was looking for and help me prevent such issues. I also love the fact they there are covers to make it more fun! Thank you!
