Hot yoga is one of the newest sensations becoming more popular by the day, but unbeknownst to some, hot yoga’s origin began in 1972 under the name “Bikram” yoga (invented by Bikram Choudhury). It’s only a matter of time that a real trend for hot yoga fashion becomes unquestionable, but as of now, exercise clothes and activewear are in!
Approaching this new form of intense yoga, preparation is key. Drink a lot of water, have enough sleep, yes, yes. But being comfortable while working through the “heat” is important to ensure positive experiences through hot yoga.
What is “hot yoga”?
Hot yoga is performed in a heated studio at about 105ºF with 30 to 50% humidity (according to OneTreeYogaOmaha). The modern hot yoga session is a 90-minute program that consists of a series of 26 postures that are repeated twice. Because of the increased intensity due to the heat, Dr. Edward Laskowski from MayClinic.org suggests checking with your doctor before trying this activity.
What are the Benefits?
For some yoga enthusiasts, the benefits of hot yoga can become a bit vague. It’s a common misconception that detoxification (down to the organs) is a common benefit of hot yoga, but detoxing can only happen through our kidneys and our liver according to Dr. Fahad Khan from NYU Medical Center. But due to all the sweating, good skin is a sure result of consistent hot yoga (according to Insider Inc.).
According to Best Health Magazine, hot yoga helps relax the body and improves the breathing (including conditions like asthma) and LiveStrong accounts hot yoga improving sleep, fat burn, blood sugar, and flexibility.
Hot yoga has many benefits including:
- Better sleep
- Increased fat burn
- Improved blood sugar
- Increased flexibility
- Increased mental concentration
- Improves breathing
- It can indirectly detox you (due to all the water you have to drink!)
It’s said that because of all the extra sweating from the humidity and because it’s an hour and a half long, water needs to be readily available before, during, and after. Dehydration is a real potential, especially for those who are less experienced in hot yoga or Bikram yoga.
Because of all the extra perspiration, clothing is going to be important in order to stay comfortable and to not be distracted by an itch or a clothing tag. I’m definitely one of the last people my friends would expect to care about my clothing & attire, but after my wife introduced me to exercise clothes I’ve been rather addicted. It makes a huge difference owning a comfortable pair of sweats – you feel lighter, faster, and less bogged down.
Nothing is more trendy than exercise clothes – see for yourself 😉
Although it’s rather funny how popular “activewear” is now, there are many options out there for hot yoga fashion. But before you order the most stylish and “cute” shirt, really consider the utilization. Will it really do the trick? Well to help with decision-making, I’ll be covering three companies that I admire for their dry clothing technology.
You might be surprised at how innovative clothing can be!
Hot Yoga Fashion
When it comes to exercise clothes and hot yoga attire, it’s all about materials. If you want to avoid being soaked, do not wear water-loving fibers like cotton, bamboo, and linen. Always go for the synthetic vs. natural. Consider polyester, rayon, and a blend of cotton/lyrca.
Thompson Tee has implemented a “Hydro-Shield” technology:
- Handcrafted in the USA
- Fully integrated underarm sweat pads
- 100% risk-free with acceptance on returns and exchanges
- Free domestic shipping!
- Seen on “Shark Tank,” “Today Show” “ABC News” and others.
- Affordable pricing at $20 to $30
The light and breathable material of Thompson Tees have Hydro-Shield technology embedded directly in the shirt in order for durability through the washing machine. All these options make their clothing line perfect for everyday use and hot yoga!
Ably has the amazing technology, Filium Technology, recently discovered through experiments by college students. The resistance this technology has toward liquid is one of the most successful online.
Filium Technology and Ably Apparel offer these benefits:
- Resistance to waters, stains, and oder
- Nano free
- Odor free
- Stain resistance
- Faster drying
- Eco-friendly, meaning less laundry
- As seen in USA Today, Forbes, Cityline, GeeWire, The Seattle Times and more!
- Price range is around $100+
Ably Apparel is a bit more expensive (not as much a Lululemon though), but with their patented resistant technology their clothes are far more durable. Sweatpants can surprisingly be used for more than lounging around the house! With Ably Apparel, their sweatpants are also resistant to sweat. I’ve of course found yoga pants as well, but I mention sweatpants because it aids in helping sweat more during hot yoga. As far as clothing, the top has to breathe, but the bottoms can help you sweat out those extra carbs (since it isn’t as noticeable).
If you’re truly in love with their unique clothing technology, do not worry! They have many options to choose from including their shirts (which are a little more affordable being around $50). They look completely normal and comfortable, but they offer strong resisting power to stains, odor, and sweat. Look trendy with these comfortable materials, but feel confident they are suitable for sweating in.
Under Armour’s ArmourVent is their newest “most breathable” fabric they’ve designed. With such a trusted label and the world’s largest exercise community with a strong background in exercise clothes, their quality is always to be counted on – especially with their newest clothing technology.
ArmourVent’s benefits include:
- Ultra-soft and smooth fabric (extreme comfort with little weight)
- 4-way stretch fabrication
- Cooling fabric
- Fast-drying and durable fabric
- Signature Moisture Transport System (providing anti-odor)
- Smooth Flat-Lock Seams
- Some shirts even provide 30+ UPF sun protection
Because Under Armour has been around since 1996 (when Kevin Plank turned an idea into an industry-changing business), their clothing line offers many options that include benefits from ArmourVent. From beginning in “grandma’s basement,” this large company shouldn’t be seen as a cold monopolizing business – they truly started with heartfelt passions for improving exercise clothes.
How could any article describing yoga fashion not mentioned the ultimate trend in exercise clothes: yoga pants. Unlike the annoying prestige of upper-class activewear, Beyond Yoga has a wonderful story in creating truly luxurious yoga attire to positively suit all sizes from XXS to XXL. Their main goal is to design products for modern living. From studio-to-street. And their motto is inspiring as well: “I am beautiful. I am me. I live my life beyond.”
Benefits of Beyond Yoga’s Supplex material include:
- Super soft
- Fast shipping
- Durable in material and likeability
- Retains color after washing
- Generous stretch
- Natural fit
Sorry fellas, there are no options for men’s yoga pants from Beyond Yoga’s clothing line!
The fact of the matter is, don’t go to hot yoga in regular cotton clothes because your sweat and odor will be soaked up into the spongy fashion that is normal cotton wear. BE PREPARED. If you don’t want to spend money on new clothes that are stained by sweat every week, then invest in some more durable options with synthetic materials.
Like I always say, the experience of any activity should not be overlooked. If you enjoy hot yoga more because of how comfortable you feel during the activity, it might encourage you to keep going every week. Rather than avoiding exercise because you don’t want to stain another shirt or you hate the “gross feeling” of sweating in your cotton sweatpants, look for more options out there –
I’ve mentioned proven technology from Thompson Tee, Ably Apparel, Under Armour, and Beyond Yoga, but there are bound to be more options out there! If I’ve missed anything in my research or you have a secret brand you absolutely love, let our community know by commenting below!
We would love to hear from you! Until then, best of luck with finding your hot yoga fashion needs. Feel free to check out other options to improve your relaxing atmosphere.
